Tech Blog: What Happens When Windows 7 Support Ends?

Introduction

I was fortunate to try Windows 7 as early as June 2009 and sadly the day the life support ended as of January 14, 2020. There are a lot of things to consider but here are the things you should know.

I still have Windows 7 what will happen?

As per Microsoft “Your PC will still work, but it will become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses because you will no longer receive software updates, including security updates, from Microsoft.”

As my previous boss said to us during the end of life of XP. Basically your house (Operating System) has no longer guard to protect you (security updates) burglars (malware and viruses) can go to your house without you knowing and steal a lot of valuable information (data and credentials).

What are my options?

Just upgrade to Windows 10

1. 1. Windows 10 Workstation costs around $399.99 and you need to upgrade your hardware as well. Note that companies are obligated to purchase a genuine operating system. Companies such as BSA can handle this kind of complaint and can confiscate all of the pirated computers.
   2. You will see that in some online shops such as Lazada product keys are available for a cheaper cost. I am telling you, do not get those. It is hard to explain how they sell it but it illegal. Participating or purchasing these items especially if you are business can cause a lot of troubles, so don’t even think about it.

Migrate to Linux

1. Linux is an open-source operating system that can run even on slower computers. If you are in a budget with some low-end computers, this is the best for you. Although, you need to be familiar with the function and it requires a higher level of savviness with computers.
2. Personally, I tried Linux for years and when it comes to making reports in Excel or Powerpoint, I always opt to Windows. Also, graphic designs and video editing is better with Windows (that is the reason why they can charge a higher price since they know there is no other cheaper competition.)

Stick to Windows 7

1. Most ATMs are still using Windows XP for the reason that upgrading and changing hard is expensive and tedious.
2. This is not advisable especially in a small business however, if you are in a budget and Linux is not an option you can upgrade your computer and operating system every few months.
3. Also, your Windows 7 is still Genuine so if the authority checks your system, you will not get in trouble. Unless you are running a bootleg copy of Office and other pirated software.

Summary 

Windows 7 support is ended, but it doesn’t mean that your computer will no longer function. It will just stop protecting your computer. If your livelihood is highly dependent on your computer or your valuable data is stored there then you must upgrade your computer once.
