Why Freelancing is Better for Newbies

I’ve seen many posts on Facebook about working students who focus on finding a job as an ESL teacher even while they’re still students. As a working student myself at one point, I want to share my experience.

Working for a Company

If you work for a company, it’s easier to find a job. You don’t need to know all the details of the business; you just sit and work as an ESL teacher. However, very few ESL companies accept working students. They might eventually ask for more hours, which can be challenging for students. Companies understand that working students prioritize their studies and family over teaching. So, they often prefer hiring those who can work longer hours and be more flexible. Although applying is easier, working students may not be prioritized because of their limited availability.

Freelancing

Freelancing offers more flexible time. You can have only a few students. When I was freelancing, I had just three students. If there was an emergency, I could ask for a leave, and they understood. It allows for better pricing flexibility because you aren’t splitting the payment with an agency or company. Most of the payment goes to the teacher (working student), unlike in companies where a significant portion goes to intermediaries. Freelancing can be more profitable and flexible.

Finding Students

Finding students can be challenging but doable. I started with social media tools like WeChat, which is popular with Chinese students, and Xiaohongshu is also useful for advertising your services. Start by networking and offering free services to build experience and gain initial customers. Word of mouth can help you grow your student base.

Understanding the Business

Freelancing allows you to understand the business deeply. You gain valuable experience and skills beyond just teaching. This knowledge can be beneficial in the long run, whether you continue teaching or move to another profession. Starting early and getting students on your own will be challenging but rewarding. Trust the process, and you will become better at it.

Good luck, and more power to you!
