IELTS Speaking Part 2 – Activity
Describe an activity you enjoyed in your free time when you were young
You should say:
- What it was
- Where you did it
- Who you did do it with
- And explain why you enjoyed it
When I was 8, my dad bought me some Play-Doh from McDonald’s, where you can shape the clay in many ways. Those things were popular back in my day. Anyway, it all started like that. At first, I only had a small cup of clay in light green and purple colors. This sparked my fascination with clay art, so I usually did it at home and rarely played outside. It was a perfect activity for me.
Eventually, my mom bought me a couple of larger clay sets with more colors. I also had a hardbound book that I used for clay molding since I didn’t have my own mold at the time. Then I created a lot of things and tried making action figures out of clay. I used toothpicks to hold the structures and experimented with mixing different colors to make random structures and houses. It was really fun, and I believe it was the best two years of my childhood.
Unfortunately, my sister and I never shared the same interest, so I did all of this as a kid in my own private space. It allowed me to expand my creativity and served as a perfect way to fidget and play. It was like having my own slime during my younger years. Whenever I wanted to make something like a horse, I would use an old nail cutter clipper to carve it. I chose that tool because it had a curved blade that worked well for carving clay at the time. However, as I got older, I found it disgusting because my hands and fingernails would get full of clay residue.
During the ages of 8 and 10, those were some of the best times playing with clay.

Is it important to have a break during work or study?
Yes, taking breaks is crucial because it allows your brain to relieve stress. For example, in the United States, freight delivery truck drivers are required to take breaks after driving for a maximum of 10 hours. It’s better to drive for 2 or 2.5 hours and then take a break. If you don’t do this, your brain can become numb, leading to accidents. This is important not only for truck drivers but also in other industries where breaks are necessary to avoid overprocessing and prevent potential collapses due to exhaustion.
What sports do young people like to do now?
There are various sports popular among young people now. Esports is a significant trend that didn’t exist long ago. Apart from that, card games, board games like chess, and competitive games like Monopoly have become mainstream. The range of activities that count as sports has expanded, providing more options for young enthusiasts.
Are there more activities for young people now than 20 years ago?
Yes, compared to 20 years ago when I was 15, there are significantly more activities available now, especially indoors. Back then, most interesting activities for kids were outside, but today, you can engage in a wide range of activities from the comfort of your home. Social media, gaming, video content creation, and various creative and academic pursuits can be enjoyed without leaving the house.
Can most people balance work and life in China?
In China, the work culture is demanding, and many people follow the “996” schedule, which means working from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., six days a week. Balancing work and personal life can be challenging for many Chinese individuals due to societal expectations. Unlike in the United States, where people strive for a work-life balance, a significant number of Chinese individuals find it difficult to make time for personal activities or creative pursuits due to long working hours.
What activities do children and adults do nowadays?
Social media has become a prevalent activity for both children and adults. Additionally, computer gaming is an activity that both age groups can engage in together. Unlike 15 or 30 years ago, when specific games were restricted to adults, nowadays, there are many games suitable for all ages, making social media and computer gaming synonymous with leisure activities for both children and adults.
Do adults and children have enough time for leisure activities nowadays?
It seems that we have both too much and too little leisure time. Many people spend significant amounts of time on social media, posting, and watching prank videos, and irrelevant content. However, others, both adults and children, find themselves overwhelmed with work or studies, leaving them with limited time for leisure activities. The balance between excessive and inadequate leisure time varies from person to person.
