IELTS Speaking Part 2
Describe a public park or garden
You should say:
- Where it is
- What it is like
- How often you go there
- What you often do there
- And explain how you feel about it
I would like to describe a public park that is very special to me. It’s called Oregon Park, and it’s located in Eugene, Oregon. This park has been part of my life for as long as I can remember, but it holds a unique place in my heart, especially after spending some time away from it.
Oregon Park is quite large and surrounded by trees, open fields, and walking trails. For someone who has lived in Eugene since birth, it might feel like just an ordinary park. However, many visitors from outside the area often comment on how peaceful and scenic it is, with its natural beauty and clean, well-maintained spaces. It’s a great spot to connect with nature and escape the busyness of life.
I usually visit the park at least twice a week, especially during weekends. It’s a routine for my family and me to take walks there. We enjoy strolling along the trails, talking, and spending time together. Sometimes, we have small picnics or just sit on the benches to relax and watch the birds or people passing by.
One thing that really stands out to me is how my feelings about the park changed after I left Eugene for about a year. When I returned and visited the park again, it had a completely different impact on me. It wasn’t just a familiar place anymore—it felt like a place where I could truly reflect and appreciate life. The calmness and natural beauty of the park gave me a fresh perspective and made me realize how important such spaces are for mental peace and relaxation.
Overall, Oregon Park is more than just a place for exercise or leisure. For me, it’s a reminder to slow down, connect with nature, and cherish the moments I spend with my family.
IELTS Speaking Part 3
- How can we encourage young people to go to parks more often?
- What tourist attractions are popular in your country?
- Why do people like to visit tourist attractions?
- What are the differences between a garden and a natural area?
- What facilities are needed in a park?
- Is it necessary to have public parks in cities?
1. How can we encourage young people to go to parks more often?
Encouraging young people to go to parks more often is challenging because their schedules are often packed with commitments like school, work, or social media, and parks may not seem as exciting as other activities. Additionally, the time and effort required to travel to a park can make it less appealing. To increase park attendance, the main barriers like travel time and convenience would need to be addressed, though this is not always feasible. However, if parks were made more accessible, with better transport options and activities that appeal to young people, such as sports facilities or events, more might be motivated to visit. But, ultimately, their commitment to other activities plays a significant role.
2. What tourist attractions are popular in your country?
In Oregon, there are many popular tourist attractions that draw visitors from around the world. One of the most famous is the Columbia River Gorge, which offers stunning waterfalls, hiking trails, and breathtaking views. Another popular destination is Crater Lake National Park, known for its deep blue water and scenic beauty. The Oregon Coast is also a major attraction, with its rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, and charming coastal towns. Additionally, Portland’s International Rose Test Garden attracts visitors who want to see thousands of varieties of roses in full bloom. These destinations showcase the diverse natural beauty of Oregon, from mountains and forests to lakes and coastlines.
3. Why do people like to visit tourist attractions?
People like to visit tourist attractions because they offer unique experiences that cannot be found in everyday life. When traveling, especially internationally, people often seek experiences that are different from what they can find at home, such as iconic landmarks, historical sites, or natural wonders. Tourist attractions provide a sense of adventure and excitement, and they allow visitors to explore new places and cultures. Additionally, many attractions are popular because they are well-reviewed by other travelers, providing social proof of their value. People want to ensure that their hard-earned money is spent on something memorable, which is why they are drawn to places that offer something special or distinctive.
4. What are the differences between a garden and a natural area?
The main difference between a garden and a natural area is the level of human intervention. A garden is typically a cultivated space, designed and maintained by humans, with plants arranged in specific patterns or for aesthetic purposes. Gardens often have controlled environments, with careful attention to what grows where. In contrast, a natural area is a place where nature is left to thrive without human interference, allowing plants, animals, and insects to live in their natural habitats. Natural areas tend to offer a sense of unpredictability and excitement, with wildlife encounters and raw beauty. Gardens, while also beautiful, usually lack the same sense of untamed exploration that comes with natural areas.
5. What facilities are needed in a park?
In any park, there are essential facilities that make it more accessible and comfortable for visitors. Toilets are a basic necessity, as they provide convenience and hygiene for people spending time in the park. Water fountains or fixtures are also important, especially during hot weather, to keep visitors hydrated. Additionally, benches and picnic tables offer places for people to rest and enjoy their surroundings. Parks may also benefit from sports facilities, playgrounds for children, and shaded areas to provide relief from the sun. These amenities ensure that visitors can enjoy the park for longer periods and that their experience is comfortable and enjoyable.
6. Is it necessary to have public parks in cities?
Yes, it is essential to have public parks in cities for several reasons. First, parks provide much-needed green spaces in urban areas, offering a break from the concrete and noise of the city. They provide a place for people to relax, exercise, and socialize, which is important for mental and physical well-being. Parks also contribute to the environmental health of a city by helping to improve air quality, reduce heat, and support biodiversity. In addition, parks offer recreational opportunities for families, children, and the elderly, creating a more balanced, livable urban environment. Without public parks, cities would lack spaces for community activities and relaxation, negatively impacting the quality of life for residents.
