Let me tell you about my friend Michael, who’s now a doctor. We went to high school together, and back then, he was the quarterback on our football team. He was this huge guy—6’7” and 250 pounds—and he was really focused on getting a scholarship to play football at a big university. He had a natural talent for the game, and he worked hard to make it happen. Football was his world, and it was pretty impressive to watch him on the field.

So, fast forward a few years, and when my son went for a visit to the hospital, I was honestly shocked to find out that Michael was now a resident doctor. I couldn’t believe it at first! This guy who used to be all about football and athletics was now in the medical field. What surprised me even more was that he chose pediatrics, which is fascinating. It’s amazing how he shifted from sports to something that requires a totally different set of skills, but I guess it makes sense. He’s always been a compassionate person, even back in high school, so working with kids really suits him.

Michael chose this career because he wanted to make a real difference in people’s lives. I know he’s always had a deep interest in health and helping others, but I think football initially seemed like the more obvious path for him. It’s inspiring to see someone go through such a big transition and follow their passion, especially when it’s something so meaningful like pediatrics.

Even though we’re not super close anymore, I’ve always respected Michael for his dedication and work ethic. I feel really proud of what he’s accomplished, and seeing him now, making a difference in the lives of kids, it’s clear that he’s doing something important. It’s pretty inspiring to see someone pursue a completely different career path and succeed.

Can a hospital function effectively without nurses?

No way, a hospital cannot function effectively without nurses. I’ve been to a hospital, and nurses are absolutely crucial—they’re the backbone of the operation. They’re the ones who are there on the front lines, taking care of patients, administering medications, and providing support. Sure, doctors are essential for diagnosing and prescribing treatment, but nurses are the ones doing the day-to-day work that keeps everything running smoothly. Without them, it would be chaos. They’re the hands-on professionals who really make a difference in a patient’s recovery and overall care.

What are the differences between the work of a doctor and a nurse?

The big difference is that nurses are much more hands-on, while doctors focus more on diagnosing and treatment plans. Doctors are the ones who determine what’s wrong, what tests need to be done, and how to treat the condition. Nurses, on the other hand, are in constant contact with patients—they’re the ones administering treatments, checking vital signs, and offering emotional support. Doctors may see the patient a few times during their stay, but nurses are there every step of the way, taking care of the details and making sure everything runs smoothly. It’s a teamwork situation where both roles are indispensable.

Do you think it is necessary to learn first aid skills?

Yes, absolutely. First aid skills are essential, especially at work or in everyday life. You never know when an emergency might pop up, and being able to act quickly can make all the difference. Whether you’re at the office, at home, or out with friends, knowing how to handle basic medical situations like cuts, burns, or even CPR can save a life. It’s not just about helping others—it’s about having the confidence to step up when it matters most. Everyone should learn the basics at least.

Do you think that doctors and nurses are not paid enough?

Doctors? Honestly, they’re compensated pretty well considering the responsibility they carry. They have years of training, and their decisions directly affect people’s lives, so it makes sense they’re paid well for their expertise. Nurses, though, that’s a different story. They’re incredibly important to the healthcare system, but they’re often underpaid for the work they do. Nurses are on their feet all day, dealing with demanding patients and handling so many different tasks, yet their pay doesn’t always reflect how essential they are. They definitely deserve more for the hard work they put in.

Who plays a more important role, doctors or nurses?

Both roles are incredibly important, and honestly, it’s tough to say who plays a more important role because they’re both essential in different ways. Doctors are critical for diagnosing, developing treatment plans, and making life-or-death decisions. But nurses are the ones providing the day-to-day care, offering emotional support, and ensuring the treatment plan is carried out effectively. It’s a symbiotic relationship—without one, the other can’t function as well. So, both roles are equally important in the healthcare system.

Do you think doctors and nurses are very important?

Absolutely, they’re extremely important when it comes to healthcare. Without doctors and nurses, the whole system would fall apart. They’re the front line, the ones who help keep people healthy or help them recover from illness. But outside the hospital, I don’t think we need to prioritize them in every situation. Yes, they’re essential for healthcare, but there are other roles and professions that play a huge part in society, too. Doctors can get away with bending traffic laws when it’s for medical reasons, but nurses? Not so much. Both are crucial, but in the grand scheme of things, their role is more focused within healthcare settings.
