IELTS Speaking Part 1 – E-Books and Paper Books

  • Which do you prefer, e-books or paper books?
  • When do you usually read online?
  • Will you read more online in the future?
  • Do you think paper books will disappear in the future?

1. Which do you prefer, e-books or paper books?

Although I have a large collection of paper books, I have recently started to appreciate e-books. With e-books, I can annotate and bookmark, and these will sync across my devices. With paper books, I might write something or forget where I left off. The improvements in e-book readers have been very helpful, especially since I read many books at once. If I bookmark several books, I can continue reading on my computer, and it will remember where I left off. So, I have come to appreciate e-books more.

2. When do you usually read online?

As a student, I read online because most information is up-to-date there. There is no need to use paper books for updates, especially for school announcements, notices, or memos. I also read news online, as it is easier than waiting for a newspaper.

3. Will you read more online in the future?

I believe so. My plan is to study abroad, and universities abroad are likely to have paperless environments. Therefore, I will probably read most of the classroom materials and syllabuses on a device.

4. Do you think paper books will disappear in the future?

I don’t think paper books will disappear. They are an important part of any civilization. While digital paper and other digital formats may become more common for safekeeping and archiving, paper books will still be used, though possibly less frequently. They may remain for another century or even longer.
