IELTS Speaking Part 1: Birthday

IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Birthday

1. What do you usually do on your birthday?

My birthday is on January 25th, and since I was 18, I’ve made it a habit to work on my birthday. This started because my first day off from my first job was on January 25th. If my birthday falls on a weekend, I work on personal projects instead. I start the day early, around 4:00 or 6:00 AM, and usually have lunch or dinner with my family. If my birthday is on a weekday, I often invite my friends for lunch and treat them. For my family, we celebrate on the closest weekend to the 25th. But most of the time, I spend my birthday working.

2. What did you do on your birthday when you were young?

When I was young, my mom would come to my room and kiss me around 6:00 in the morning because I was born at that time. We didn’t have a lot of money, so my mom would make homemade spaghetti with just tomato sauce, no hot dogs. I was very happy with that simple celebration with my family, even though I rarely had cake.

3. Do you think it is important for you to celebrate your birthday?

As a kid, celebrating my birthday felt important because it made me feel good about myself and my life’s purpose. But as an adult, it doesn’t seem as important. The last time I was really excited about my birthday was when I turned 25. By the time I reached 30, I didn’t even tell people about my birthday. It feels a bit egotistical to invite people to celebrate it as an adult; it seems more appropriate for kids.

4. Whose birthday do you think is the most important to celebrate in your country?

In our country, significant birthdays might include those of founding figures like the nation’s founders or current leaders. Some might argue that parents’ birthdays are important, but the most significant birthday is that of Jesus Christ, especially in the Philippines. Christmas holds a special place there, as the country uniquely celebrates it as early as September, creating a distinct festive atmosphere.
