IELTS Speaking Part 1: Asking for Help
IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Asking for Help
1. Do you ask for help when you have a problem?
Although I grew up with a lot of siblings, they were older than me, so I realized I needed to solve my problems by myself. My siblings already had their own families when I was young, so I became independent out of necessity rather than choice. Over time, I’ve become somewhat self-reliant, but there are times when people offer help, and I can’t refuse because I genuinely need it. However, I prefer to be seen as a problem solver rather than someone who always seeks solutions from others.
2. Why are teachers always willing to help students?
My mother is a teacher, and I don’t completely agree with this statement. Sometimes teachers need to teach students not to rely on others for help, which is a bit paradoxical. Some teachers aren’t always willing to help because it doesn’t increase their salary and might not advance their careers. If a teacher is willing to help, it’s often due to their personal values and altruism, not external motivations. I’ve seen teachers who just do their job without extra assistance because it’s not required for their career advancement.
3. What kinds of help do you often ask for?
Most of the time, I seek help with errands. For example, if I need to go somewhere and handle tasks like picking up laundry, I tend to ask for help. It’s not purely asking for a favor, as I usually pay the person helping me. For instance, I dislike going to the laundry shop to pick up my clothes, so I ask for help with that and pay the person, often including a tip.
4. When was the last time you asked for help?
The last time I asked for help was a few weeks ago. I was cooking a dish and needed some ingredients from a store a few blocks away. Instead of stopping what I was doing, I asked someone to buy the ingredients for me. I gave the person $10, even though the ingredients cost only $4, and told them to keep the change for a snack or whatever they wanted. The person was happy to make $6 for a quick errand, and I got the ingredients I needed.
